Artist Statement — Sara Paxton
Momentum from June 5th 2026
Art Nuvo Gallery
Movement sits at the core of this body of work. In Momentum, Sara Paxton explores the quiet force that carries landscapes, seascapes, and still life beyond stillness capturing not just a moment, but the energy that drives it forward.
Working in oils, Paxton builds layered compositions where colour becomes both structure and emotion. Vibrant greens, charged pinks, deep blues, and luminous earth tones are pushed and pulled across the canvas, creating tension between control and release. Her mark making sometimes gestural, sometimes restrained echoes natural rhythms: shifting tides, wind through grasses, light dissolving across a horizon, or the subtle weight of objects resting in space.
Across the exhibition, there is a deliberate balance between abstraction and recognition. Forms emerge and recede, inviting the viewer to engage not only with what is seen, but what is felt. The landscapes and seascapes suggest expansiveness and motion, while the still life works ground the collection, offering moments of pause within the broader flow.
Momentum reflects an ongoing pursuit: to translate movement into paint, and to hold energy within form without fixing it in place. Each work becomes a point within a continuum alive, shifting, and unresolved mirroring the way we experience both nature and time.
